Finding Balance Teacher Training Program

July 19 - 23 2008, Petaluma, California
A core mission of finding Balance Inc is the training of Health Care Educators in the Finding Balance in a Medical Life curriculum. This 5 day teaching program will cover core areas of research on physician health, personality structure and inter-personal function. It is designed to train the participant to be a facilitator teacher in the area of physician and medical trainee health. The program will train the participant to teach small and large group classes in the area of physician health and lead seminars in this area.

The program will begin at 10 AM on Saturday, July 19th and conclude at 4 PM on Wednesday, July 23rd.

Finding Balance Curricular Content
The Finding Balance Program is divided into modules, each building on the others to maximize the effect of the course work. Each session is 2 hours long. There are nine core content areas which can be utilized by the trainee as needed.

Managing Stress - This session will help the participant understand effects of stress on the physician’s life. This session will focus primarily on physiology and cognitive models of stress. This content also teaches tools to use while surviving transition into a new role.

Emotional Shifting and Emotional Intelligence - This session will focus on the physiology of and applications of emotional shifting and the use of biofeedback. Exercises will be focused on managing stress in various difficult circumstances.

Meditation - This session will focus on the physiology and philosophy of meditation. It will also cover aspects of application of meditation in the clinical realm, as an intervention. A 20 minute practice will be taught. The participant will then be asked to practice 20 minutes of guided (CD) meditation daily.

The Physician Personality - This session will focus on understanding the psychological make-up of the physician and how it can create problems. This session covers Type A behavior, perfectionism and workaholism.

Psychosynthesis  – This session will help the participant understand their personality and give the participant tools to restructure their personality and attitudes. The teaching will be of an experiential nature.

The Science of Connection and Communication - This session will outline the scientific data on inter-human connection and relationship, and teach tools to enhance communication, empathy and intuitive listening.

Physical Well-Being - This session will be a review of the areas of nutrition and exercise. The intention is to have the participant understand the relevance of these areas and their application for clinical practice.

Humanizing Errors – This session will help the participant teach others to manage medical and personal error. It will outline key points on the ethical, legal and psychological outcomes of error and judgment. It will help the participant to bring in the previously learned tools to manage this sensitive area.

Moving Forward  – This session will help the participant to identify core needs and goals. They will also create a mission and vision statement for their lives and an action plan to move them toward the completion of this mission.

Course Cost = $1000 for course and materials
Room and board options
$500 for room and board if shared
$600 for room and board if single, unshared room
$300 for meals if not staying on-site
